In early October, the British government announced its decision to relinquish sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, transferring it under the control of Mauritius. This decision may impact the internet industry, as it raises questions about the continued existence of the .io domain, Every reports.
The .io domain, which is frequently used by tech companies, is associated with the British Indian Ocean Territory — a UK overseas territory that includes the Chagos Archipelago.
After the agreement between the UK and Mauritius is signed, the territory will cease to exist, and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) will have to remove the country code IO from its system.
The American organization IANA, responsible for registering top-level domains, relies on ISO data, meaning that, in theory, the registration of new .io domains would have to stop. However, IANA has not yet made a final decision on the fate of the .io domain.
IANA Services Vice President Kim Davies, in a comment for Computerworld, noted that there are several potential solutions to the problem. First and foremost, consultations with the authorities of Mauritius are planned. If negotiations do not yield results, the process of phasing out the domain will begin, which will take about five years. During this time, site owners in the .io zone will need to find a new domain.
